5 Manicure Essentials for Healthy Nails

It takes more than just a pretty nail polish to have flawless nails. Proper nail care takes effort and a top-notch manicure kit. With the proper tools, you can keep your nails in perfect condition without having to visit the salon.

Here are the five nail essentials you need in at home to keep your nails healthy and flawless:

Revitalizing Cuticle Oil

Cuticle oil nourishes and heals your nails and hands, and also prevents cracked cuticles and hangnails. Make sure that during your manicure process you never cut your cuticles! Cuticles serve the very important purpose of protecting your nail beds from bacteria and therefore should remain cared for and untouched. Instead, use a cuticle pusher to gently push back the skin after softening it with cuticle oil.

A Quality Nail File

You should have a glass nail file in your kit. Glass nail files are gentle on your nails, and they’re easy to clean, which means no unwanted bacteria gets under your nails like it can with a regular nail file. Use your nail file correctly to get the best results: smooth out the edges by stroking the file in one direction rather than in a back and forth motion. Sawing at your nails will just tear up the tips and leave them more jagged than before, while moving in one direction smoothes out the tips in just a few strokes.

A Fantastic Base Coat

If you’re a fan of dark nail colors, a base coat is your best friend. A base coat will protect your nails from being stained or discolored by darker polish tones. Choose a base coat that contains essential oils to promote stronger and healthier nails. A flawless base coat also helps fill in any odd bumps or ridges on your nails, making your polish look smooth and even across your whole nail. With the right base coat, your nails will be primed and ready for polishing.

A Great Top Coat

Sure, you may be able to find a nail polish that will last a long time without a top coat, but a top coat will give any nail polish that extra protection and have the added benefit of adding shine! So to give your manicure the final glistening touch, you’ll need a top coat that gives you the glossiest shine and one that dries quickly.  Make sure to swipe the top coat over the tip of your nail to keep your polish from chipping.

Gentle Nail Polish Remover

You want to use a nail polish remover that is free of acetone or acetate, as these are harsh chemicals that can dry out your nails and cause them to peel and weaken. A more gentle, acetone-free nail polish remover may take a bit more time and rubbing to get the nail polish off, but your nails will thank you in the end.
