4 Movies With Strong Female Leads

Having a movie night can be fun, but it can be frustrating when the characters on-screen, particularly the female ones, do not seem to offer much inspiration to their female viewers.  Many movies feature women as nothing more than a damsel in distress or an object that men pine over.  The “girlfriend” of the movie is not relatable and can be so much more, but unfortunately, does not flourish throughout the entirety of the film. Thankfully, the film industry is moving in the right direction creating realistic, strong female characters. While Hollywood continues to be a male-dominated industry, that does not mean that there are not any movies with strong female characters. Here are our top five film picks with strong female characters from the past 30 years.

1. Hidden Figures

The recent Oscar nominee for Best Picture is based on the incredible true story of the female African-American mathematicians who helped put an astronaut into space in the NASA program in the 1960’s. The three women at the center of this story are determined to be taken seriously as talented mathematicians and make sure that when one succeeds, that person will lift the other women with her. This movie is one of the most inspiring films about women that will make you laugh, cry, and wonder why you have not heard of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson until now.

2. 10 Things I Hate About You

This classic rom-com starring Julia Styles and the late Heath Ledger is a modern twist on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. The defiant feminist Katerina, played by Styles, is not caught up in the immature boys at school, until she meets her match in Ledger’s Patrick. Although Katerina is falling for the boy, she does not allow him to change her. She will always be the funny and tough book-lover and viewers fall in love with her because of that.

3. Silence of the Lambs

This film stars Jodie Foster as a young FBI agent that is determined to track down a killer of women. This film will always be a classic feminist film because Foster’s Clarice Starling does not back down from any fight. She does not receive much help along the way nor does she need it. Even though she is brave, she fears the sick world that she has found herself in, but she pulls through. Her willpower continues to inspire viewers to this day.

4. Wonder Woman

This past summer, we finally got what we have been searching for: a superheroine that can defeat the God of War. Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, may not understand mankind, but she wants to save it. Not only was this film a success critically and monetarily, it has given young girls and women a female comic book hero to look up to.

These are just a couple of films that feature strong female leads.  Whether you are looking for some inspiration in your life or just looking to have some fun, there are many movies that can leave you feeling proud to be a confident, strong woman.
